Letters for Hellenized Christians

The every-year-publishing Ben Witherington is including 1 Peter in a new two-volume commentary labeled Letters and Homilies for Hellenized Christians to be published by InterVarsity Press. The first volume, already published, has as its subtitle A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary on Titus, 1-2 Timothy and 1-3 John. The next volume is supposed to deal with 1-2 Peter. According to the info available on Amazon.com it will comprise 416 pages, and is to be published in January.

Ben Witherington is here applying a socio-rhetorical method, a method he has presented and applied in several other volumes. The method has the same name as that developed by Vernon Robbins, but it is in no way that sophisticated. Nevertheless in volumes published so far, he has managed to apply insights from rhetorics and its social world in a meaningful way. One may. however, wonder what makes him use the label Letters for hellenized Christians for these letters, and not for letters like Thessalonians and other letters by Paul. By the way, Ben Witherington also has his own blog.
